After reading this sentence the only thing I could think of was how the evolution of communication to others has gone to a heavy photo base. Things like snapchat, instagram, reddit, and even picture messaging. These are just a few examples, but these mediums use a caption and a photo to convey a message.

A picture can say more.
This photo doesn't necessarily point towards the downfall of reading, but that all the words in this book can be conveyed with pictures in less space. It is similar to the evolution of computer games going from text based adventures to visually stunning adventures that can still engulf the player, but requires far less dialogue. This can also be compared to adapting a book into a movie, all the descriptions used in the book are presented as beautiful scenery that the viewer only needs to glance at to see what might have taken several pages to describe.

ReplyDeleteYes, that's another good example of what's happening with images replacing words. Sometimes this makes me wonder if we aren't losing the ability to communicate visually with the written word. I love to read a book before seeing the movie! But I've also seen several movies that were adapted from a book that I didn't read. Sometimes the movies can convey the details of the story really well, but I've also seen some that didn't come close!
I see that you have chosen the same quote as Julie, this must be because it spoke to both of you. As I had mentioned before, I feel that this line does get across what the author is trying to say. Although pictures are taking rise, I personally feel that words still hold some value in the art of communication. I love your picture, it speaks a powerful message. It sort of makes me feel like I am reading Fahrenheit 451 again sitting in a high school classroom. One day our society may come to this, who knows.
ReplyDeleteI really like your photo that went along with your quote. I almost picked this quote myself. I feel that text is being used less in social communication. If we do use text we usually abbreviate. Images have been on the climb with apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. I do still feel that text in important, but I love how we are using different ways to communicate. We capture moments through images that we can look back on for keepsakes. It is really a beautiful thing. I also love how you mentioned that the image can represent a book becoming a movie. I think that is a great thought and never realized it until you brought it up. A lot of books now are being turned into movies and being a smash at the box office.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your peers! Your metaphor communicates a powerful message about the changing nature of literacy in the 21st century! I also think you made a strong analogy between books becoming movies and picture replacing words. However, movies never seem to be as good as the book. I wonder what we will miss out on as we move to a more visual mode of communication.
ReplyDeleteI really like your quote, and I agree with you. Most of the most popular social media sites are based on the images, and that quote captures it perfectly. I also really like the picture you used. It's pretty powerful given the context of what we were reading.
ReplyDeleteYour quote made me instantly think of my Instagram feed today; beaches, friends with their dogs, etc... with those photos I can tell what they're doing and most likely what they're thinking.
ReplyDeleteYour photo is great because you're correct in saying pictures are replacing words in a way. The way you described a movie shortening a book because we see an image so quickly that may have taken pages to write is comparable to photos today in media. Instead of sending a text telling someone what's for sinner, why not just snap a picture and send that? Obviously that the norm!
I chose the exact same quote--it's such a beautiful line.
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out the evolution of communication media. While snapchat normally comes with a caption, instagram doesn't always follow suit. It's a lot like analyzing an art piece--we have to read between the lines.
You pointed out that as consumers we are moving towards video games in place of books or other forms of dialogue. Do you think we are trying to achieve more stimulation from our entertainment?
It seems like we are increasingly craving more stimulation; and I wonder if at some point everything will become a simulation.
