This presentation takes key concepts from Deconstructing Digital Natives: Young People, Technology and The New Literacies. The concepts are in chronological order from the first chapter to the last. Each chapter has 1-2 slides that convey their message. What the story shows is that world is split into Digital Natives, people born in 1980 or after, and Digital Immigrants, people born before 1980. This concept is quickly examined and concluded that this is not a good method for discerning different levels of digital literacy skills. Digital literacy is more likely determined by the amount of interest a person shows and not some inherent ability. Taking what we see as Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants and transforming their image. Also, being more specific in the terminology that is used when analyzing the data collected. Having more defined terms can give the data more specific meaning, which can lead to more tangible results. Even taking the terminology we already have and reclaiming it to give it a better definition could give the data more meaning. This book is about giving these terms more meaning, how digital literacy affects the population, and what determines an individual's digital literacy. One that can be certain is that if someone has an interest in a subject then they tend to do better at it than a person who does not show interest. This is the same in all areas of life, no matter the age.
I love what you said in your explanation paragraph that digital literacy has to do with the interest you show, not what you are able to do. I also like that you instruct the viewer that your slides go in chronological order. It seems after watching your presentation you and I think alike, I feel your presentation is similar to mine. I liked how you explained to the viewer what a digital native is. I thought your pictures and word choices went well together, and I also liked how you emphasize diversity. Most of the presentations I have viewed have emphasized this as well.
ReplyDeleteOverall, great and informative presentation. I loved your images you used to demonstrate digital nativism and also how it progresses with ages. Your song was nice to listen to as well. Your words matched your images and all the slides followed the same pattern. It made it easy to grasp and understand! Loved it!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with you presentation. It read well, both the text and the images so I had no problem following along. Sticking to the same font and color scheme throughout lent to the cohesiveness of the presentation. I also liked the music; I felt it provided an upbeat pace that created an emotionally hopeful feeling. It also had a sort of futuristic element that reminded me of a musical score for an action film.
ReplyDeleteYou had a good mix of images, some that were thought provoking and a few that made me chuckle. Your introductory image, the blocks could be interpreted as either deconstructing the concept of digital natives as well as constructing an entirely different concept; which was really the point of the book. In choosing the images you did for digital native and immigrant also clearly denotes the connotation of the two phrases.
Nicely done!
