Explain some of the benefits of youth filmmaking for learning in and out of school.
Youth filmmaking for learning in school is a way for students to express themselves and share with others what they might ordinarily not share because they are shy and are just not very good socially. It gives all the students a voice to tell who they are and adds a more exciting learning environment rather than having worksheets and lectures. Out of school the students are able to spend their time doing creative things at home and getting inspiration from their surrounds. Going out and doing their favorite activities while collecting materials for their films. This also gives the filmmaking process a better feel of being fun and less like homework.
I am planning to explore filmmaking with my youth team I am hoping for something out of the ordinary from them and I think this may be it. I like the organization of your blog I am still playing around with blogging and all the different tools I can use with it. It kind of reminds me of myspace.

ReplyDeleteSean,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your connection of using filmmaking at home to relate to the projects that students would be working on at school. Giving students the experience to connect their school and home lives makes the learning more meaningful.
Also, it's important to keep in mind (as we saw in the TED Talk from last week, and read in Neil Postman's excerpt) who currently controls the media that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Providing the students with a way to get directly involved in the creation and delivery of their own messages empowers the youth to create more realistic and human connections. In a world inundated with corporate messages in the media, it is revolutionary to give voices back to the youth.
I agree with you that digital storytelling allows all students to experience success in the classroom. It also helps to keep students away from worksheets and lecture and processes taxonomy of learning.
ReplyDeleteYou are all making wonderful connections between youth film making and learning in school!
